The Origin of Fangboner Farms
Even as a young man, Roland Richardson always had a green thumb. It all started with caring for an extensive house plant collection, taking in plants that people had long given up on and bringing them back to life, to realizing that he loved growing his own produce. After retiring from his work at Toledo Edison, he decided it was time to go back to his roots, live the simple life, and grow a business that he could enjoy for years to come. With over 30 years of gardening under his belt, he certainly had the expertise — and the land — to make it happen.
In 2009, along with a partner, Roland co-founded Fangboner Farms on his property with the vision of marrying his South Carolina roots to the Midwest region he had come to love so much. It was time to make his love of landscaping and farming come to fruition. No one knows for sure how the idea of starting a business first took hold, but one night, probably over a glass of Roland’s homemade wine, the inspiration to turn his passion into a reality became increasingly strong, and Fangboner Farms started to take shape from that moment…
So everyone asks, where did you get that name??? Trust us. We hear this all the time. The Farm’s co-founder had a 10-year-old son who was tickled to death over seeing a sign that read “Fangboner” on the family’s way to Cedar Point. You may have seen the sign before. It’s on a bridge just before the Fremont, OH exit on the Ohio Turnpike. Think like a 10-year-old boy and you’ll understand his giggling. After that giggle-fest, Fangboner became a member of the family — blamed for things, who to ask if the kids said they didn’t know something… basically a beloved imaginary friend. So this fun family story became the inspiration for naming Fangboner Farms.
